Hello, i have been working out for many years now. And i hope that someone can give me some advice. This past weekend, i was diagnosed with diabetes(type 2) they have started me on oral diabetic medication, But with possible injections in my future(i hope not) So as you can see im pretty bummed out. Especially since i try to stay in shape and what i eat. Family genetics has done me in. I was so shocked when the doctor told me that i forgot to ask about supplements like (creatine, glutamine, protein, no) My mind was blank, and my mouth had dropped. But i forgot to ask Him and thats my question to all of you , is it possible to take all of those supplements, and it not interfere with my medications, and sugar levels?????? Your answers would be greatly appreciated. And i thank you in advance of your replies. Another thing i would like to say is that, although we hit the gym hard and try to eat well, and take care of our bodies, you might be sick on the inside of our bodies, just because we pack on muscle, and look fit, we automatically think that we could never be sick, but think again y friends. So please check with your doctors and get checked often, so that you dont end up with the same bad news as i did. Well god bless and keep strong .. |

Jesse, I'm sorry to hear that man. My step dad has diabetes as well. I don't know the answers you are looking for, but I'll post it out to the twitter world and see if I can get some. Just keep your head up and keep eating right. ______________________ |

Jesse, It would help to have some stats on you, specifically What is the oral meds you're now using? If injections are needed are needed in the future, it is just insulin correct? Your Profile is as follows: Age: 39 Height: 5'11 Weight:250lbs BF%: ??? Are these numbers still accurate?? It would be incredibly valuable to get you BF% tested this will tell so much more about your condition and how to now modify your nutrition in light of the recent diagnosis. Do you log your meals? If so lets see at least a three day run down on what you were eating pre-diagnosis. IF not track everything you eat for at least a week and lets take a look at what it is. You are going to want to examine all the basics first to see if they are in check before worrying about supplements, because keep in mind they are just that "Supplementary" to a rigid nutrition and training program. In short, protein and glutamine are going to be fine to continue to use (protien depends on the source, some protein powders are high in sugar, obviously avoid this. The protein itself is not going to affect your blood levels) Creatine will also depend on the source, the majority of creatines are now put into a "Delivery Matirx" or some kind of high sugar/dextrose drink mix for the very purpose of causing an insulin spike to help shuttle the creatine into the muscle cell. These will very easily throw your levels out of wack. (this is the very reason many bodybuilders pro and amateur actually inject insulin when they eat because it drives all the nutrients into the muscles and can spark the release of other growth hormones from the body) |

First, sorry to hear about the diagnosis. It's a terrible disease if it is not controlled. Continue to take care of yourself, and you will lead a long, healthy life. There are some pretty serious athletes that have type 1 and type 2. My wife has been type 1 since age 12 (I won't tell you how old she is now, but she's had it awhile). She monitors everything down to the wire, including exactly how many cals she consumes, as well as her macronutrients, as these affect how much insulin she takes. As to your question about supplementation, as far as I can tell, there should not be a problem, however do your due diligence on each one. The creatine is a natural occurring chemical in your body, so that should not be a prob. You want to be careful with your liver, as diabetes plays nasty pranks on organs such as this. With that said, think long and hard about how much protein you consume. Overall however, protein is good for you. Just watch how much sugar is in a whey protein powder. Avoid things like glucosamine. It's great for the joints, but will wreak havoc on bloodsugar readings. Again, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I do not wish this disease on anybody. Educate yourself, as that is how you will win that battle. If you have any Q's, let me know. ______________________ Todd B.-- PhitZone San Antonio Diet & Exercise Examiner |

Those times that you feel weak, are your sugars lower than normal? If so, consider a pre-workout, and post-workout protein shake. Because of her calorie requirements, I have my wife doing have a shake before, and the other half afterward. ______________________ Todd B.-- PhitZone San Antonio Diet & Exercise Examiner |
